CHIEF OF POLICE

  TOWN OF HERTFORD, NC

The Town of Hertford, North Carolina, is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Chief of Police. Hertford is a diverse, historic community with a population of 2,143 located along US Highway 17 in Northeastern North Carolina between Elizabeth City and Edenton. Hertford has a Council–Manager form of government, with a Mayor and five Council members. The Police Department provides service twenty-four hours per day, seven days a week with eight full-time officers and three reserve officers. The Chief of Police is a "working Chief,” and regularly works a patrol shift. The Chief of Police is hired by, and reports directly to, the Town Manager. The Department has an operating budget of $720,000.

Candidates for the position are required to have at least ten years of strong technical and command or supervisory level experience in a law enforcement agency. Other requirements include: a strong commitment to community-oriented policing; excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communications skills; the ability to relate to elected officials, Town staff, citizens, and other law enforcement officials; thorough knowledge of federal, state, and municipal ordinances related to law enforcement.

A bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice, Public or Business Administration, or a related field; an equivalent combination of education and/ or experience will be considered. Advanced training through the Southern Police Institute or the FBI National Academy is a plus, as is possession of an Advanced Law Enforcement certificate issued by the State of North Carolina. Must meet and maintain minimum training and experience requirements for the position as established by the department and the State of North Carolina.  Must be certified as a law enforcement officer in the State of North Carolina by the North Carolina Training and Standards Commission. 

• Thorough knowledge of modern law enforcement and crime prevention principles and practices

• Thorough knowledge of the statutes, laws, and ordinances which pertain to law enforcement

•Thorough knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the town, or ability to gain the       

            same

• Ability to prepare clear and concise reports analyzing departmental operations

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with varied audiences

• Ability to effectively supervise and evaluate the work of staff, and to motivate, communicate, counsel, and otherwise establish high morale and productivity

• Ability to exercise sound judgment and react effectively in emergency situations

• Ability to maintain good physical condition

• Ability to deal tactfully and firmly with the public

• Ability to prepare departmental budget and provide fiscal analysis and justification of proposals

• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Town officials, co-workers, other law enforcement agencies, and the general public

• Ability to gather, interpret, and explain technical and statistical information 

• Skill in the use of firearms

Reserve Police Officer

The Town of Hertford is currently accepting applications for the position of Reserve Police Officer. The Police Department provides full police services to the community, including community policing, traffic and criminal law enforcement, emergency response, investigations, special events and special operations. The Department serves a public of approximately 2200 residents.

Selected candidates will have to complete an extensive pre-hire process that will include a medical examination, pychological examination, and drug screening. Reserve Officers are required to work a minimum of 16 hours per month to keep their certification with the Town of Hertford. Successful candidates will also have to complete the department's orientation and field training program prior to working alone as a reserve officer.

All applicants must already have their Basic Law Enforcement Certification and eligible for immediate certification with NC Criminal Justice Training and Standards. All applicants must also possess a valid NC Driver's License at the time of appointment.

Full Time Police Officer

The Town is currently accepting applications for the position of Fulltime Police Officer. The Police Department provides full police services to the community, including community policing, traffic and criminal law enforcement, emergency response, investigations, special events and special operations. The Department serves a population of approximately 2200 residents.

Selected candidates will have to complete an extensive pre-hire process that will include a medical examination, psychological examination, and drug screening. Successful candidates will have to complete the department's orientation and field training program prior to working alone as a police officer and are required to complete a 12 month probationary period.

Applicants must already have their Basic Law Enforcement Certification and be eligible for immediate certification with NC Criminal Justice Training and Standards.  All applicants must also possess a valid NC Driver's License at the time of appointment. Starting Salary is $31,121 with excellent health and benefits package.

Administrative Support Specialist

The Town is seeking an Administrative Support Specialist for the Police Department. Applicants must have a valid NC driver’s license. This is a full time position with excellent medical, dental, vision, with State and 40lK retirement benefits. Minimum starting wage for an Administrative Support Specialist is $10.60 per hour.
